The crack was loud. A man chopping wood. One three inch thick piece became a projectile. The crack was his nose. Dillon reacted by twisting and leaping back trying to avoid serious injury.
The one piece hit him hard. He could feel it landing on his lower lip and nose. Dillon felt it hit his face. He was unsure of the damage.
Reaction time over. He leaned forward from the pain and confusion. He had been punched by bigger men. He had fought in school with other boys. How could this one piece of wood shatter him.
He reached up to his face careful not too touch his skin. Blood dripped onto his palm. One drop wasn't bad, he thought. Then came more drops. He began sweating, he kept saying over and over.
"I'm all right, I'm all right. Dam, that guy who works with wood does this? Screw that, what a freaking hard job he does. I'm all right, I will be all right."
He knew if he needed to he could suture anything. Of course without any pain killers he knew that job wouldn't be easy. The blood was filling the palm of his hand he looked down and knew this wasn't good.
He grabbed for rags he had used to clean his truck. He was clumsy in his own house. Dizzy from the blow to his head. He now was rushing against time. The bleeding would eventually clot up or not. But pressure would be the first protocol. Night fall was coming fast he needed to get moving.
His emergency box had everything in the event of a major earth event. The storms had grow horrible in winter. Most tried to weather them out under ground.
Dillon found his clean wound supplies. He looked up to see his nose half hanging there. Well that would have to go he thought. Cutting the tissue away that was hanging from his horribly cut face.
He poured clean water over it. The rock basin filled with red. He got the tiny wood out. Placed a clean dressing over it with home made salve. He would check it tomorrow. Today he had to get the seeds planted. If any food would be available for winter.
